I prefer science fiction, fantasy, and horror without the spaceships, dragons, and zombies.

Ready Player One

Ready Player One - Ernest Cline I'm not a fan of pop-culture references to begin with. I am biased in that regard. But this really seemed to me like the literary equivalent of a list of favorite things from some guy's social networking site. I stopped reading after an impromptu '80s trivia contest that actually involved high-fives and fist-bumps. The premise seemed contrived, constructed solely for the purpose of setting up a justification for the author to indulge in nostalgic name-dropping.

This wasn't for me. But I'm sure those who squeal with delight at the very mention of Garbage Pail Kids, Donkey Kong, and MUDs will eat this up.
